(Edmonton) It might have been the busiest day of the year at the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering as hundreds of visitors and alumni met with students, professors and researchers to discover the energy of engineering.

It’s important because many of our visitors are high school students who are considering engineering.

“I’m interested in pursuing engineering, mechanical engineering. I am specifically focusing on cars,” said Hana Rozycki, one of hundreds of high school students attending the event.

Engineering Expo does have an impact. Through conversations with students and professors, prospective students get a better feel for how they can have an impact on society through engineering. One civil engineering student volunteer said that it was a trip to Engineering Expo that convinced her to study engineering.

“That was the day that I made up my mind,” she said. “I knew I wanted to become an engineer.”

The day’s program includes tours of labs where research teams delve into pressing challenges as exotic as remote robotic surgery, or as common as the science, physics, and engineering of welding.

This computer engineering lab is designing a robotic arm that can operate on a beating heart!

The Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining explores the science and technology of welding.

“I’m an engineer. I know the impact I’m making on society is huge. It’s a truly rewarding experience. I want my kids to make an impact on the society.”

Tae Kwon, a professor in civil engineering and transportation came to the Engineering Expo with his daughter. “I’m an engineer,” he said. “I know the impact I’m making on society is huge. It’s a truly rewarding experience. I want my kids to make an impact on the society.”
